5 Days Late

Beware the evil ides of March,
They’ll stab you in the back or heart.

Should you bear the name of Caesar
I’d offer you a final teaser:

Stand many hands and feet apart
From fellow friend and statesman Mark.

Or I can vow you’ll know the day
When, both broken and betrayed

By the one you loved the best,
Blood will spurt forth from your chest.

You’ll die surprised, you’ll die confused,
Choking out a gasped “Et tú?”

(Thanks to Camuccini for his painting “The Death of Julius Caesar”)
